Sharyn Alfonsi reports on how cellphones and mobile phone networks are vulnerable to hacking

The only thing in the headline that is not true is the word ‘Breaking’. It has been a well known “secret” for decades.

Anyone that have been working with the SS7 protocol know that it has so many flaws that it is no problem for a hacker to listen in to a conversation, check your SMS/MMS or even locate you.

What is needed?

  • Access to a SS7 network
  • Your phone number

So, if you get SS7 access via an operator in China, Indonesia or Liechtenstein you have access to more or less all mobile phones in the world.

Isn’t it a little scary that any agency can tap into your business life no matter nationality – or any private organisation for that matter?

Take a look at the ’60 Minutes’ hands-on report from CBS News.
